Swissdom

I love Switzerland. I'm going to live here. Probably after I graduate. All I need is a job and some housemates. Wanna come?

Repainted

And I can't even see her until mom and sister return from their road trip across the US on August 20th. PAIN.

Saturday, August 02, 2008

I'm taking some steps to make this blog (and my life on the interwebs in general) more private. I've taken the link off my facebook, removed my name and picture, and set my fb account to private. Privacy concerns have been raised by research we are conducting at CMU:

(read about some of it in this super-short and interesting article)

Basically, people are very likely to divulge information in an informal setting (such as facebook and blogs) when privacy issues are not salient, and will be more forthcoming than they would be in a formal setting where information is more likely to be protected. So, as counterintuitive as that seems, we are readily giving information where it is least safe. And you might think that the sorts of things that you give away in the internet are harmless, but that is not the case. For example, much of this generation's social security numbers were created using a simple algorithm taking solely into account birthdate and birthplace- so if one knows just that information, it is only too easy to steal someone's identity. And if that's not enough, all kinds of people are looking at your facebook, from grad schools to potential employers to your parents. And they WILL judge you based on it. Not to make you paranoid or anything, but it's probably a good idea to keep your information a little safer.

Change of Plans

It turns out I probably won't be driving up to Portland with Julie and KC but instead with Alex. So, not the initial plan but still a good choice. The ex-boy will be going to OSU this fall (and will consequently be very close all the time). I don't know when we plan to leave, but I need to be there by August 28th at the latest for babysitting.

DC was hella fun. I didn't realize that there was so much to do in such a small area. Also, my friends are wonderful hosts. (Thank you!)

As much as I am enjoying this internship, I am ready to be done with Pittsburgh. I would like some beautiful West coast weather for a change. Ava, g-ma and the parents are visiting in turns from August 7-10th to celebrate my birthday and then I only have a few days left before I fly back to LA. I'm definitely ready for some relaxation.

This is not even funny

I woke up at dawn to the sound of a jackhammer right outside my window. And now it is 9:00 and I need to get ready for work with almost no sleep. I want to strangle a bitch.

Things I am excited for:

The Mattress Factory- a largerthanlife contemporary art museum I'm going to tomorrow with some of the other interns
My Black/White joint birthday party at PIKA with two of the other interns
Working more closely with the grad students and professors once most of the other interns leave
Journal Club! A nerd (like myself)'s wet dream. Perfect.
Going to DC!!!! Serena! Dave! Tourism! Maybe Jolly will be there. Can't wait!
My real birthday. Turning 21. Hoping to have fun people around for my special moment...
Being back home as a 21-year-old
Being in LA in general. Seeing the bestests before driving with the other bestests up to PDX.
Road trip!!! Stopping in Santa Cruz and San Francisco on the way. I loves it.
Decorating my house in Portland and living with new people. Moving in, cooking, living. Adventures.

Oh, decisions

Do I take the "highly recommended for grad school and related to things I do enjoy but no fun at all in itself" computational cognitive science class next semester on Monday/Wednesdays or the "intrinsically fun but a ton of work and less related to the area of study that I plan on entering" psychopathology course that is offered on Tues/Thurs which would keep ALL of my classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays? Then there is "Addictions", which I would also love to take.

What to dooooo? Overload? Is that a terrible thing to do while thesising? I know I really should take the compsci course but I don't want to lose psychopathology (which I'm currently signed up for).

Nostalgia

So it's hitting me.

Maybe it's a product of my recent but shortlived boy situation, or maybe I've just been too far from my loves for too long, but this evening I seem to not be able to pick myself out of this rut. I can't stop thinking about how much I miss everyone and how sad I am that aforementioned boy had to leave. It's funny, because I really only knew him for a few weeks, but somehow something clicked between us. If only I could keep him from leaving. But no, he's gone, and I'm alone again with no urge to find another. Sometimes I am so hopeless. Sometimes I would rather think about the beautiful memories I've already made than create new ones.

I am too tired to write. But I feel like I need to.

IRCS is over and now I'm at Carnegie Mellon for my rest-of-the-summer internship. I really like Pittsburgh so far, much to my surprise. I went to the Natural History and Art Museum today with some other interns (there are about 10 total) since we have Friday off every other week. We're split into two teams, and we alternate schedules of working in the lab and distributing surveys outside in various areas of Pittsburgh. So far it's been a lot of fun and not too too much work. The people are nice but it's hard getting to be comfortable with some of them because they've already gotten pretty close in the two weeks they had together while I was in Philadelphia. So that kind of sucks, but I'm working on it. Consequently, I reallyreally miss all my friends back home, with home meaning LA and Portland. I'd like to not try so hard to fit in with people. It was really great at IRCS where we all in the same situation, not knowing anyone and trying desperately to find a niche, and we ended up all becoming friends with each other. I miss those kids too. Hopefully I'll see at least some of them sometime in the future.

Sorry for being so boring. Museums are exhausting.

IRCS Summer Workshop

So here I am in Philadelphia at UPenn for this 2-week workshop in cognitive neuroscience. It's been more work than I expected, and I'm pretty much exhausted by the end of each day, but I've still somehow found the energy to be social and make friends with all the awesome people here. See my most recent fb albums for photos of my favs.

I will update more soon, but I've got to run to class. I just wanted to post a little tease for the moment.

Summaaa

That means summer. Which it does NOT feel like at all because Portland doesn't believe in summer.

So, things have been hella busy lately with classes and finals and Renn Fayre and moving and planning and such, but I will (sort of) get a chance to relax when I go to visit and travel with Julie in a few days. And I only say sort of because traveling, for me, is never quite relaxation. It's AWESOME and one of my favorite things to do, but I am always constantly busy- and I know this vacation will be no different. We have a lot of plans for quite a few places to visit in just two weeks. If I haven't already told you (which is unlikely), we're going to Spain, Switzerland and Italy or more specifically Madrid, Sevilla, Barcelona, Bern, Spiez, Oey-Diemtigen, St. Gallen, Zurich, Venice, fair Verona, the Cinque Terre and Milan. Plus wherever the hell we feel like stopping on the way. Sweet, no?

Sidenote: Eye of the tiger just came on shuffle. Which I find incredibly amusing considering all the drama surrounding the lack of playdom every hour on the hour in the library lobby. Oh, Reed I love you.

Today I discovered videos on facebook. I thought it would be a mess and really complicated, but in fact it's really easy and awesome. I strongly recommend leaving me a video comment. It will make my day.

Packing is a bitch. I just wanted to get that out there. I really should be studying for the psychopharmacology test I need to take tonight, but I am so unmotivated at this point that I can't even think about school. Especially when I need to worry about how the hell I will move everything to my house (HOUSE!!!) at some point before tomorrow night and I still have many many things yet to be stuffed in boxes. Apparently I can't fit all of my things in the 10 boxes I bought from the bookstore. I want to take a moment to bitch about how expensive boxes are. $2.75 for a "large" box that is really a small box in disguise? It's disgusting how the bookstore takes advantage of those unfortunate enough to have no other option than paying ridiculous amounts of money to buy boxes. I need at least 5 more but it pains me to think of how much I am spending on simple cardboard.

Oh man, I just remembered there would be free CAVE meat today at noon. I guess I am too late. I will have to get my protein in other ways.

Why I love Reed

In signing up for next year's housing lottery, I encountered:

Gender Identity: female male
Residence Life recognizes that people identify with gender in ways that are not classifiable by only male or female. If your gender identity does not fit one of these terms, or if you are not comfortable choosing male or female, please contact Residence Life and we will work directly with you through the housing process.

Amazin' Glazin'

I made a mug today. Or I guess I just painted it. Anyway, it was fun to do something semi-artsy for once.

Also, I went New Seasons shopping yesterday and now my fridge is full of delicious. Mmmm artisan bread I love you.
I officially have a new crush. And yes, I am going to call it a crush like I'm in middle school.

Anyone man enough to wear these shorts is fine by me.

Well this was certainly the week for PASSING. I passed my qual and Ava passed her driver's test. My little sister has a license, yay/ahhh!!!

Squier Retreat

was incredible. More details when I feel like writing, but basically I had an awesome time and got to hang out with tons of people who I never really see outside of class and the Reed bubble- and it was great!

I couldn't have said it better myself.

Why am I so consistently amused by everything on someecards? Really, I feel like they dove into my brain and put all of my sarcastic, snarky and bitchy (and sometimes true) thoughts onto cards.

Ozomatli

was INFINITELY better than the Decemberists. Dancing right in front of the stage and with the band members (!) was awesome, as was doing something other than homework on a Thursday night. I did feel a little out of place along all the partiers, but still had an amazing time. Now I need to go download some Ozomatli.

But first, some things that just popped into my mind.
-Yay for Amrita and friends that are not drama. Boo to passive aggressive mean friends who make you feel like they took you and wiped their ass with your feelings.
-Can't wait for the Squier Retreat this weekend. I really don't know what to expect but I'm sure it will be fun. I emailed everyone who's going saying they should bring exercise clothes if they want to run and do yoga with me and got two responses, both from professors. That will be a fun sight- me running alongside my profs. Hehe. Good thing I like them all so much.
-Tomorrow: Lab, RDDA exam, work in the neuroscience lab, go to OMSI for my behavioral observation group project, aka watching kids play and calling it work. Then finally taking a break from this hellish week. Would someone like to cook with me tomorrow night? Or go out? This is probably not the best place to ask but if you read this in time, call me!

Reverse Strip Poker?

Sometimes I think Reedies just need to keep their pants on.

Saturday, February 16, 2008

I've decided to make a concerted effort to branch out and make some new friends. I don't know when I am going to make time for this to happen, but it definitely needs to happen.

Also, thanks to KC Deane for making me to agree to it, I'm going to run a
5k race.

Just got back from Costco. I won't have to buy toilet paper for the rest of the semester, whooo!!!!!!

Thursday, February 14, 2008

Oh yeah...

Happy VD Day!

Got a box of delicious oatmeal cookies from my mom- they're already gone (I didn't eat them all myself!).

Also got my bank statement...and realized bow badly I need to stop spending money and start making much much more.

More importantly, though, our half-birthday party is tomorrow!

For no reason, whatsoever

I decided not to go to my PE class. Literally, I have no excuse. I am constantly justifying everything I do, giving a reason for every action, but not today. No contemplative meditation for me. Today I am not going just because I am not going. Strange thought.

Wednesday, February 13, 2008

Soooo upset about a certain person in relation to a certain event. Trying to make the best of it though. I can still have fun anyway, even if a dt5mil is trying to get in the way of a half-birthday. Really though, when have we ever put dt5mil or any other lame Reedevent above bestfriends4life? Never. Not me, at least.

Let's just get drunk.

Monday, February 11, 2008

I just decided that I like Amy Winehouse

Come baaack

Life is hard with no bestfriend to chillax and smoke pot with every day.

QUAL

Woot! Wish me luck!

Friday, February 08, 2008

For lent

I'm giving up religion.

Wednesday, February 06, 2008

Hallelujah, I see the light! Finally, after at least four months of pitch blackness outside my front door, the lights have been replaced. What a wonderful feeling it was to come home tonight and not have to stare at my keys for ten minutes to figure out which is the right one and figure out how to put it in and struggle endlessly because I can't see a thing. Wonderful, I tell you.

Also, I've been inspired by a woman I babysit for to begin thinking of time in terms of babies born. We were talking about how horrible insurance is and how it took them FOREVER to get her car fixed and she something to the effect of

"For Christ's sake, three thousand babies were born in that time!"

and I thought it was absolutely hilarious. And so I am officially stealing her cleverness. But I want to actually work out the math because I'm sure her number wasn't actually meant to be right and how cool would it be to really know how many babies are born in whatever amount of time?

So roughly 5 babies are born per second. 2 people also die, but I'm not counting that- let's not get all depressed here.

86,400 seconds in a day so that is 432,000 babies born in a day
604, 800 seconds in a week so that is 3,024,000 babies born in a week
2,629,743.83 seconds in a month so that is 13,148,719 babies born in a month

Useful information, if you ask me.

Another Important Announcement

Jake is now Julie.

Just so you know.

Some friends

I just really REALLY love.

Some are consistently disappointing but I like them anyway.

But the ones that I love, I love madly. You know who you are. I just thought you needed a reminder.

The rain, the gloom, the Portland winter

So I'm back. Just settling in, and getting used to my apartment again. It's sort of strange without Malka here, but I guess I've spent a lot of time alone here anyway.

I've got to make a list so that my days here aren't spent sleeping and more sleeping.

Laundry
Restock fridge with groceries
Unpack and reorganize things
Get rid of things I don't need
Get mail
Go to Sports Center
Do yoga in apartment
Set up workout routine, do it everyday
Print photos and do something fun with them
Cook fun new things!
Actually go to a Paideia class for once
Go to buffalo and buy skinnyjeans and maybe some new boots

Saturday, January 05, 2008

Three cheers for getting skinny!

Ava had me try on a pair of her pants yesterday.

AND THEY FIT.

Needless to say, I'm pretty ecstatic.

Surveytime (continued)

What is your best friend's Mom's name?
Which best friend?

Where is the weirdest place you have a mole?
Underground?

What body part do you wash first?
My face. I think. I'm not sure I really have an order, surprisingly.

Do you have any piercings?
Four.

Do you have an innie or an outtie?
Nobody really has outties, do they?

What's your favorite flavored Pringles?
Sour cream and onion of course

Have you ever been tied up?
Only in bed...

Do you parallel park or drive around the block?
It depends how long I have been looking and generally how frustrated I am with life.

Which shoe do you put on first?
Almost always the left.

Have you ever been to a gay bar?
Who hasn't?

Is there one thing all of your ex's have had in common?
They were all the same person.

Did you french kiss before you were 16?
I believe so. But calling it french kissing seems so juvenile. It's just kissing.

Have you ever been cow-tipping or snipe-hunting?
Just because I was born in Cincinnati does not mean I am retarded.

Have you ever had a poem or a song written about you?
I think so. Or he just told me that to get in my pants.

When is the last time you played the air guitar?
I've always had trouble with that.

Have you ever peeked in the opposite sex's locker room?
Oh, Palihigh. It was the same as the girls' but dirtier and smellier.

What's the weirdest thing you have done while driving?
Painted my nails?

Have you ever bitten your toenails?
Gross.

How do you normally eat your cookies?
I'm not sure I understand the question. I like them warm and chewy.

When working out at the gym, do you wear a belt?
Do people do that?

How many drinks does it take before you get drunk?
It varies.

How often do you clean out your ears?
I literally just did it. Is that weird?

Do you scrunch or fold your toilet paper?
Scrunch. More surface area. Clearly the smarter choice.

About how many times a day do you pick a wedgie?
Never?

Have you ever been dared to do something you totally regretted?
No, I usually stay away from doing things I know I'l regret.

Do you want to bring sexy back?
Oh, it's been brought.

Does the number of people a person's slept with affect your view of them?
Definitely. Although only if it's an inordinately high number.

Are you a good tipper?
Better than I can afford.

What's the most you have spent for a haircut?
I think it was $95 but not usually more than 60.

What song do you want played at your funeral?
Something not depressing.

Would you tell your parents if you were gay?
I think they would figure it out first.

What would your last meal be before getting executed?
I'm getting executed?

Beatles or Stones?
I know that Stones is the expected hardcore answer but really, the Beatles are more brilliant than the Stones could ever wish to be.

If you had to pick one person on earth to die, who?
Just one?

Do you walk around the house naked?
Sometimes. But only when no one else is home. I hope you got a really great mental image from that.

If you were an animal what would you be?
Some kind of exotic wildcat. Probably a snow leopard.

Hair color you like on someone you're dating?
That's probably the least important thing that comes into play. And I'm not trying to sound non-superficial, because clearly looks are important, but hair color? Who cares?

Would you rather be blind or deaf?
A combination would be fun. Although if I had to choose, deaf.

If you weren't straight, what person of the same sex would you do?
I despise that this survey is assuming that the survey taker is straight. Just for that, I'm not going to answer. I can't choose between all my hot girl friends anyway.

Do you sing in the shower?
Only if I am convinced that no one will hear me/judge my showersinging.

Would you ever get plastic surgery?
If it were reconstructive surgery, yes. For vanity reasons, no.

Have you ever caught a fish?
I hope so.

Do you like pickles?
Yes.

Prefer to know everything about your significant other, or be regularly surprise.
Know everything. This applies to everything and everyone.

What were you doing at midnight last night?
I probably shouldn't disclose. Watching Elizabeth II or whatever it is called, among other activities.

Who did you see in concert first?
Bjork. I was eight.

Would you make a fool out of yourself in public if it meant you were making your partner laugh?
I would probably be too shy.

Would you prefer the lights on or off during sex?
Always off.

Do you judge people solely by their musical preferences?
Completely.

Would you ever start a relationship with someone who was still living with an ex for financial reasons? I can't answer this, the question is too convoluted. It totally depends, although probably not.

Do you need to know everything about someone's past?
I would like to.

It is more worthwhile and satisfying to improve the world or appreciate the world?
Probably appreciating it but I'd rather try and improve it anyway.

Do you believe that dreams can be messages from a "higher level"?
Don't ever ask me such a dumb question again.

Would you rather have a great friend you could share everything with or a great lover you can't really talk to?
Friend friend friend!!!

Is the male or female body the closest to perfection?
Neither. Although women are much more aesthetically pleasing.

Should a child who's caught masturbating be punished?
That would imply that masturbating is a bad thing.

Do you like kissing in public?
I actually don't have much experience with that.

Did America really put a man on the moon?
Haha. Noooo.

Would you date someone significantly (9 years or over) older than you?
Depends how old I am at the time.

How well do you handle criticism?
Not.

When fooling around with someone, do you sometimes have sexual fantasies about other people?
It's happened.

Is it possible for full-figured women to be equally attractive as thinner women?
If not more.

Would you have a 'Happy Button' installed on your body, connected to your brain, which would instantly make you very happy whenever you pressed it?
If you mean a catheter that would inject whatever preferred drug into my body on command, that can't be very healthy. No.

We are all human, do you judge someone for a past indiscretion?
We all judge.

What is sexiest on a woman or a man?
Depends on the person.

Do you consider yourself sexually open minded?
To an extent.

Would you rather marry a virgin or someone experienced?
What would make you think he'd still be a virgin by the time we married?

Have you ever had a true one-night stand?
What is a true one-night stand, as opposed to an untrue one?

Would you prefer if good things happened, or interesting things?
Why not both? If I have to choose, interesting. Good can get boring.

Sorry this one is so long. Your problem for reading it, I guess.

What is in your bedroom?

Found this survey. Thought it might be fun. I'm answering about my Reed apartment bedroom, not back-in-LA parents' house bedroom.

Condoms: Plenty
Cell phone: If I am in my bedroom, yes
Book shelf: It doubles as a random things shelf, but it certainly holds books along with the cans of playdough and photo albums and clothes.
Couch: If only there was enough room.
Futon: No thanks.
Computer/laptop: My desktop stays on the desk in my room and my laptop occasionally comes with me downstairs if I want to internet in bed.
Pictures: Everywhere. Not enough in frames, however. I should work on that when I get back.
Mirror: It's embarrassing how many of those are in my room.
Skateboard: No.
Bed: Is this question really necessary? Yes, my bed is in my bedroom.
Clothes on the floor: I try not to, but it happens from time to time.
Surfboard: In Portland. Totally.
Smoke detector: I honestly have no idea.
Piano/keyboard/Guitar/bass/drums: I almost wish so.
Locking door: No need for that, silly.
Bottle of water: No, those stay upstairs.
Blacklight: Umm no.
Lava Lamp: Yes, but unfortunately it's broken.
Medals/ribbons: Haha.
CDs: Upstairs as well.
Flag: Of what? No.
Stop sign/any sign: Sorry, I am not in a frat.
Paintball gun: Refer to last question.
Real Gun: You must be joking.
Cigarettes: Possibly.
Pot: Not currently.
Any drugs: Nope.
Alcohol: Nah.
Books: Many.
Gum: Tons of it, mostly orbit.
How many windows do you have in your room: One. And it's sort of underground.
What is the color of your walls? White
Do you get ready for the day in your room or the bathroom? Both, but mostly my room.
What's on your walls? A dried red rose, and zebra/breakfast club posters.
Has the opposite sex been in your room before? Yesss.
Has the opposite sex been on your bed? Yesss.
Has the opposite sex slept in your bed? Yesss.
Ever had sex in your bed? Yesss.
Who usually sleeps in your bed other than you? Just me!
Do you like your bedroom: Love it.

Obamaaa

Yup. Iowa caucus down, just the presidency to go!

Also, I just registered to vote. Good job Aline, you are a real American now.

Also also,
I've finally got a plan or getting back to Portland. I'm flying (so no car, sadly) on Thursday the 10th arriving at 12:30pm. If you want to pick me up from the airport, that would be lovely. I'll even buy you lunch or something.
